Publisher’s Synopsis
The transformation of Norfolk by Victorian railway entrepreneurs was not without its problems. The East Norfolk Railway Company was threatened at its birth by the withdrawal of investment, and the stories of the Eastern and Midlands Railway and the Great Eastern are those of amalgamation and take-over. William Smith’s book is an informed guide to this, and also examines many other aspects of the county’s railway history. ‘Norfolk Railways’ includes the works at Melton Constable and famous named trains- the ‘Norfolkman’, the ‘Broadsman’’ and the ‘East Anglian’- as well as engines, stations and locosheds, from nineteenth-century beginnings, throughout the age steam and in more modern times. Many branch lines (eventually closed in the 1950’s and ‘60’s) are also illustrated. William H. Smith is an experienced author and railway historian, and his wide-ranging pictorial survey will be fascinating reading for railway enthusiasts in East Anglia and beyond.
