The Girls of Chequertrees By Marion St. John Webb

Pamela Heath's adventure starts with a rather an odd invitation from a distant relation,  Miss Crabingway, who wants her to go and stay in her house, Chequertrees, while she is away on business for six months.  Pamela is not to be alone, as she will be acting as  hostess to 3 other girls.  They all have to observe certain strange conditions,  one being that they must not enter a certain locked-up room.  Not one of them has an idea of Miss  Crabingway's reasons behind these strange arrangements.  Under this mystery, the four girls live and plan their new lives and the story tells of their adventures.  Finally, at the end, the veil is lifted and you discover how happiness is brought to one of the girls through this unusual experience.
